History of the National Flag of India

When we want to discuss the history of the national flag of ancient India, one thing must be said that in those days there was no unified existence of ancient India i.e. India was divided into different states and all those states had different flags. Sachindra Prasad Bose first felt a need for a national flag of India after the declaration of the Bengal Partition movement. He designed the national flag but later it did not go much further. Then Balgangadhar Tilak and Ani Basant designed one of the first national flags during the Home Rule Movement in 1917.

In 1921, Mahatma Gandhi asked Mr. Venkaiah to design a national flag which would have the following features. The national flag will have a spinning wheel as a symbol of self-reliance. Then in 1933 this flag was revised and a new design was created in Karachi. But the greatest day for the national flag was the day when Lord Mountbatten felt the need for a national flag. This time again the national flag and the design was revised but this time it was not the Charka instead it was Asoka Stambha.

The national flag of India was adopted from 20th July 1947 and adopted three colors although these three colors had no communal significance.
