One of the most attractive tourist spots in Kedarnath is the Gandhi Sarovar, which is actualy a lake which is also known as Gandhi Tal. It is located about three kilometers from Kedarnath temple but you have to walk this distance. The lake was named after Mahatma Gandhi in 1948. According to Hinduism, this is the place where Lord Shiva taught to Saptarshi Yoga. Next to it you will find another temple called Bhairav Nath Temple. And the Madhu Ganga waterfall located right next to this temple is where you can relax for a while.
Those who are here as tourists must go to Shon Prayag at least once, actually Shon Pragya is a small village. This small village with an altitude of about 2000 meters above sea level is located at the confluence of two rivers. The two rivers are Baski and Mandakini respectively. According to people’s belief, bathing in this river washes away all the sins of his previous birth and he can enjoy this life anew. There is a peak near this place which is almost always covered with snow. In fact, the main reason why so many tourists come to this place is the natural environment of its extraordinary beauty. About ten kilometers from this place is a place which is said to be the marriage ground of Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati. The name of the place is Tri Yogi Narayan.
If you are planning to travel to Kedarnath then your vehicle will stop at the last border which is Gaurikundu and the remaining 16 km road you have to walk. This place is Gaurikundu. This place is located at an altitude of about 6500 meters above sea level. The main attraction here is the high water spring which is visited by many tourists. From the natural point of view this place is very attractive but also from the religious point of view the place is very important. According to Hindu mythology, this place is associated with Lord Ganesha, in fact, Lord Ganesha is said to have received the elephant’s head from this place.
Another name of Vaski tal is Vasuki Lake. It is a beautiful lake situated at an altitude of about 4200 meters above sea level. This part is surrounded by four or five big mountains so the natural beauty here is very attractive. The beautiful natural scenery created when the sun rays fall on the water flowing through this lake is sure to attract any tourist. According to Hindu belief, Lord Vishnu took bath in this lake. However, this night water completely freezes in winter. The road to reach this place from Kedarnath Temple is very narrow and inaccessible so older people will find it difficult to reach here and you need to be physically fit enough to reach here otherwise you may face a lot of difficulties.
The tomb of Adi Shankaracharya is located just behind the Kedarnath temple. He was the man who established Chardham and was a saint of great stature. According to Hinduism he attained special enlightenment at the age of 32 only and his death was not natural but dissolved into the earth. It is believed that Adi Shankaracharya came to Kedarnath in the 8th century and built one of his four monasteries.
After that you can go to Bhairabnath temple which is just 500 meters away from Kedarnath temple it is located on top of a hill but you have to walk from here. The specialty of this temple is that there is no roof on top of this temple i.e. it is completely open from above. According to popular belief, if you visit Kedarnath and do not visit the Bhairabnath temple, you will not get its good results. Before opening the Kedarnath temple, it is the rule to first worship the Bhairab Nath temple and then open the doors of the Kedarnath temple.
To reach the Kedarnath temple, whichever way you come, you have to stop at Gowrikund and then you have to walk about 16 km to the Kedarnath temple.
