Famous Pilgrimage Site of Hooghly
Tarakeshwar or Taraknath temple, the famous pilgrimage site of Hooghly is located in Hooghly district of West Bengal. Lord Shiva’s Sea churning form and fierce form are special in this temple.300 years ago, in 1729 Raja or king Bhormullo of Ramnagar donated his all properties to Tarakeshwar mandir built in.

The temple has 4 gates. The south door is the main gate . There is a statue of Lord Shiva churning the ocean on the gate, there is Kali Mandir, Lakshmi Narayan Mandir, Natmandir, Dudhpukur, there is Shivalinga on huge eight pillars.
The section on the Kali Mandir of Tarakeswar Temple looks a lot like a chong. The original temple is located between Shiva temple and Kali temple, the temple has been built many times
The history of Tarakeswar temple is associated with Mukunda Ghosh and his domesticated cow Kapila and Mayagiri, a monk from Uttar Pradesh.
It is said that King Bharamulya had a huge cattle shed and entrusted it to Mukunda Ghosh. King Mukund Ghosh is accused of stealing a cow Kapila as a thief for giving less milk, later Kapila is seen going to a forest at night and giving her milk on a Shivalinga. The king decided to build the temple after seeing it and seeing the strange majesty of the monk Mayagiri perpetuate the place.
Behind the temple is the tomb of Mukunda Ghosh.
Devotees bring water from Shyoraphuli ghat, 37 km from Tarkeswar temple, and pour it on the Shiva lingam.Also, many devotees pour water from the dudh pukur.
While giving water to Shivlingo 4.00 am to 12.00 pm and 4.00 pm to 8 pm.The temple is open throughout the year, Sundays and Mondays are relatively crowded.
